Korean Nucleotide Archive (KoNA) is a genomic data respiratory operated by the Korea Bioinformation Center (KOBIC) for storing and sharing high-throughput genome read data produced by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology and serves as a representative genome open database in Korea.
The standard format of KoNA's genome data follows the format stipulated by the International Nucleotide Sequence collaboration (INSDC). Therefore, the data registered in KoNA is compatible with that of the Sequence Read Archive (SRA) at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI).
In addition, all data deposited in the KoNA are curated and quality-controlled. Then, all these qualified data are released to the researchers. All publicly available data provided by KoNA, except data generated from human materials, can be used without any restrictions.
Genomic data from human materials must be shared and used under the ‘Enforcement Rule of Bioethics and Safety Act (Bioethics Act)’ and the ‘Health and Medical Data Utilization Guidelines’ in Korea, prepared by the Personal Information Protection Committee of the Ministry of Health and Welfare in September 2020. All data can be collected and shared in compliance with this act and guideline. In the future, KoNA will expand for deposition, management, and sharing of all data produced from several genomic platforms, such as cutting-edge single-cell techniques.
